Fort Bend County Issues Hurricane Awareness Proclamation
Fort Richmond, May 22, 2007 - Fort Bend
County issued a Proclamation designating May 20th-26th
as Hurricane Awareness Week. County Judge Robert Hebert
said, “ Hurricane Season is less than two weeks away.
The best defense is preparedness and public education
about the dangers of high winds, storm surge, flooding,
and tornadoes that may occur for hundreds of miles in
conjunction with a hurricane or tropical storm. The
county is urging residents to begin taking the necessary
steps to prepare now. As we enter the 2007 Hurricane
Season, it is important that all residents develop a
disaster plan, assemble a disaster supply kit, and keep
informed about hurricane and tropical storm forecasts.”
Fort Bend County employees have been preparing
for what is predicted as an active hurricane season.
Last week the Fort Bend County Office of Emergency
Management hosted its first annual 2007 Hurricane
workshop where over 125 people attended. Participants
learned about preparation, volunteer opportunities, and
hurricane predictions for the upcoming season. In
addition, critical county departments, along with
numerous cities have continued to exercise the county’s
emergency plan in anticipation for this year’s hurricane
season.
Fort Bend County Emergency Management
Coordinator Jeff Braun stated, “With hurricane season
about to get under way we will continue to prepare and
coordinate with other agencies, but are hoping for a
repeat of last year's mild season.” More information on
disaster preparedness can be obtained from
